More on the Power of Surrender by: Deborah Deras

Have you ever noticed that whenever you make a decision to work on an issue opportunities to work on it pop up everywhere? I shared in our last issue that my husband lost his job. I appreciate all of your support by the way. He did secure a part-time job teaching art to at-risk youth. He is interviewing seeking opportunities to use his artistic talents.

This week, I am surrendering the fact that my 95 ˝ year old Grandma who is like a Mother to me is not going to live forever. We joke that we are bonded because she took care of me for the first 6 weeks of my life. When I was speaking at the Parents as Teachers Conference in Missouri she had multiple strokes which resulted in the loss of all of her motor functions. She can no longer live alone or care for herself ironically all of her mental capacities are in tact and she still finds joy in bad mouthing Bush.

She is such a role model to me obtaining her Masters Degree from Columbia University when women were not even going to college. Now, my Grandma, Ida is forced to surrender and accept that after 951/2 years of total independence she may need to slow down and accept help. Accepting help is something I am learning in the challenging process to coordinate between family members to find a suitable living situation for my Grandma. The Superwomen in me thinks I am responsible for the happiness of my entire family. I sometimes forget the amazing network of wonderful friends that would be happy to listen and lend a hand if I just surrender and allow them. This week after two little breakdowns I called two of my best friends since grade school and cried on the phone several times. It felt so good to release and let go of the tremendous burden of being super self-sufficient. Why? It is not worth the energy drain. I realized that it takes courage to surrender. Try it, if you do you will find that you experience more ease and grace. (The Power of Surrender is just one of seven principles in our new book, “Confessions of an Adrenaline Addict” to be released this Summer).

We recently started working with the Money “Doc”, Jim Savage, who has transformed our financial life.  He is an accountant with loads of experience who has helped many small businesses grow into million dollar companies over the years.  He now spends part of his retirement helping small businesses organize and take charge of their finances.  He set us up on Quickbooks online and acts a consultant for us financially throughout the month for a reasonable monthly retainer – Because of his breadth of knowledge he gives us invaluable advice in so many areas. Jim and I are using him for both our personal and business finances.  I can’t recommend him highly enough.  If you want to experience a feeling of financial freedom and control over your money, call Jim.
